Palace of Viceroy Laserna
Jerez de la Frontera Cathedral
Charterhouse of Santa María de la DefensiónJerez de la Frontera is one of the easiest Andalusian cities to reach from the United Kingdom. Its own airport sits about 6 miles from the centre, roughly eight minutes by road, and has direct flights from the UK. Once you arrive, the cathedral, the Alcázar and a run of old palaces and convents all sit within about half a mile of one another. With close to 213,000 residents, this is a proper working city rather than a resort, set inland at just 53 metres above sea level. Summers are hot and dry, and spring and early autumn bring the kindest weather. The Atlantic towns of the Cádiz coast are all within about 17 miles, which makes Jerez a practical base for a fortnight of culture with beach days added.

Palaces, Cathedral and the Alcázar
The heart of Jerez is compact. The Palace of Viceroy Laserna is about 0.4 miles from the centre, and Jerez de la Frontera Cathedral and the Alcázar de Jerez de la Frontera, the city's castle, are a similar distance away, so the three main landmarks fit easily into a single morning on foot. Close by are the bullring, the Plaza de toros de Jerez de la Frontera (about 0.3 miles), and the Palacio de Camporreal (about 0.4 miles).
For churches and convents, the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Carmen Coronada is about a quarter of a mile out, the Iglesia-convento de la Merced about 0.6 miles, and the Convent of Saint Joseph and the Convento del Espíritu Santo both around half a mile. The Palacio de los Marqueses de Bertemati is another palace about 0.3 miles away, and the Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Jerez, about half a mile away, is a good choice with children.
Further afield, the Charterhouse of Santa María de la Defensión, a monastery about 3 miles out, the Yacimiento arqueológico de Doña Blanca archaeological site (about 4 miles) and the Yeguada del Hierro del Bocado museum (about 5.5 miles) are worth the short drive. Old Centre or Further Out
Most visitors will want to stay in the historic centre. The cathedral, the Alcázar, the bullring and nearly all the palaces and convents lie within about half a mile of one another, so you can walk everywhere and leave the car hire for day trips. As a city of almost 213,000 people, Jerez keeps a lively everyday rhythm in its core all year.
Jerez is inland, so there is no seafront to choose. If you would rather combine sightseeing with the beach, staying on the edge of town towards the coast roads puts El Puerto de Santa María and Rota within easy reach. The hotel listings on this page show live prices for the dates you choose.
Hire a car

Coast and Towns Nearby

Tips from Robin
Practical Points Before You Go
Jerez is inland, so a beach day means driving. Rota, Chipiona and El Puerto de Santa María are the closest options, all within about 17 miles. In July and August, when highs reach 33 to 34°C, see the old centre early and save the afternoon for shade or the coast.
With almost 213,000 residents, Jerez is a full-sized city that works outside the summer season too. Pack a waterproof if you come in March or October, the two wettest months.
