Plaza de Toros de los CalifasCórdoba is a city of around 325,000 people on the plains of inland Andalusia, sitting just 117 metres above sea level. It has no coastline, so it suits a culture-led holiday rather than a beach one. The big draw is the Mosque-Cathedral, a cathedral that was once a mosque, about a mile from the centre. Within easy walking distance are the Puente romano, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the caliphal baths and a cluster of Roman remains. Three airports with direct flights from the UK lie between 70 and 85 miles away. May is the most comfortable month, while July and August regularly reach 37 to 38°C.
Why go
- The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, a former mosque turned cathedral, sits less than a mile from the centre.
- Roman remains are close together, from the Puente romano to a 1st-century mausoleum at Puerta Gallegos.
- Seville, Granada and Málaga airports all have direct UK flights and are within roughly two hours' drive.

Staying close to the monuments
Córdoba is inland and a sizeable city, so the real choice is how close you want to be to the sights. Most of the major monuments sit within about a mile of the centre and of each other. A base in the historic core lets you walk between the Mosque-Cathedral, the Roman bridge and the Alcázar, and retreat indoors during the midday heat in summer.
If you would rather have quieter streets, staying a little further from the Mosque-Cathedral area still leaves most sights within walking distance. Live hotel prices for Córdoba are shown on this page.
Hire a car
The easiest way to reach Córdoba and the villages around it is a hire car from Seville (SVQ), about 1 h 39 min away.
