Antequera is an inland town of around 45,000 people in the Provincia de Málaga, set at 519 metres above sea level and about 24 miles from Málaga Airport. It is a place for culture first: the Antequera Dolmens Site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies just over half a mile from the centre, while the Alcazaba, the bullring, a convent and two palaces sit within easy walking distance of one another. Four miles out, El Torcal de Antequera adds a protected natural landscape to the mix. With direct flights from the UK into Málaga, Granada and Gibraltar, it suits a short break, a fortnight's base or a day out from the coast.

Dolmens, Alcazaba and El Torcal

The two names that draw most visitors are El Torcal de Antequera, a protected natural landscape about 4 miles from town, and the Antequera Dolmens Site, the World Heritage Site roughly three-quarters of a mile from the centre. Close to the dolmens, around 0.8 miles out, the Archaeological Ensemble of Antequera Dolmens operates as a museum and is a sensible companion visit, including for families.

In town, Antequera's Alcazaba, a castle listed as a cultural heritage monument, stands under half a mile from the centre, with the bullring and the Museo de la Ciudad de Antequera each about a third of a mile away. Where to stay in Antequera

Old Town Base or Quieter Edges

Antequera is inland, so the choice is not beach versus town but centre versus outskirts. Staying in the historic centre puts the convent, the palaces, the city museum, the bullring and the Alcazaba all within roughly half a mile, so you can explore on foot and walk to dinner.

With a population of around 45,000, the town is lively enough without feeling hectic. If you plan to drive out to El Torcal, Lobo Park or the Cueva del Toro, a base on the edge of town, nearer the dolmens, can make parking and early starts easier. This page shows live hotel prices so you can compare options across the town.

Hire a car

The easiest way to reach Antequera and the villages around it is a hire car from Málaga (AGP), about 34 min away.

Getting there from the UK

Flights, Drives and the Road South

Three airports with direct flights from the UK serve Antequera. Málaga (AGP) is the closest, about 24 miles away and roughly 34 minutes by car. Granada (GRX) is about 45 miles away, around an hour's drive, and Gibraltar (GIB) is about 74 miles away, roughly an hour and three-quarters by road. Car hire from any of them makes sense if you want to reach El Torcal and the outlying sites.

The nearby ferry ports of Málaga (about 22 miles), Motril (about 61 miles) and Algeciras (about 79 miles) run routes to Morocco and the Spanish enclaves, not to the UK, so they are only useful as an onward excursion. Driving all the way from Calais takes around 23 and a half hours at the wheel, best split over several days.

Tips from Robin

Practical Points Before You Go

At 519 metres, Antequera is cooler at night than the coast: even in June the average low is 16°C, and in winter it falls to around 5°C, so pack a warm layer outside high summer.

The town centre is walkable, but El Torcal, Lobo Park, the Cueva del Toro and Jévar Castle all lie between 4 and 6 miles out, so a hire car or a booked tour will save time. In July and August, with highs of 34 to 35°C, plan outdoor visits such as El Torcal for early in the day.
