Almería Holidays: Packages, Resorts and When to Go

City · Spain

Almería holidays have an unusually short gap between landing and settling in. The airport has direct flights from the UK and sits about seven minutes' drive from the city, so you can reach your hotel almost before the cabin crew have finished their goodbyes. Above the old centre stands the Alcazaba y Murallas del Cerro de San Cristóbal, a fortress with walls running along the hill, and the cathedral and Museo de Almería are only a short walk away. The summers are hot and dry, with July and August reaching 32°C. If you would rather stay a little outside the city, the seaside town of Aguadulce lies roughly six miles along the coast.

Who this city suits

Almería is a real working city of almost 200,000 people rather than a purpose-built resort, and that is its appeal. Couples and anyone who likes to wander will find plenty within walking distance: the Alcazaba, the Iglesia Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, the Museo de Almería, the Museo de Arte de Almería and the Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía are all within about half a mile of the centre.

Because the airport is so close, an Almería city break or a short break makes good sense; you lose very little of a long weekend to travel. Families who want a quieter seaside base may prefer Aguadulce, a smaller coastal town along the shore, while the city itself suits those who enjoy evenings out among locals.

Where to stay: city or coast

Almería city puts you right beside the main sights and the port, and its location on the coast keeps the sea within easy reach. It is the most practical choice for first-time holidays in Almería, and the transfer from the airport takes around seven minutes.

Aguadulce, about six miles from the city and some 16 minutes from the airport, is a coastal town of around 14,000 people. It suits couples and families who want a calmer pace and still like the city to be a short trip away. Rioja, around seven miles inland and only 12 minutes from the airport, is a small village of roughly 1,300 residents; it is best suited to travellers who want quiet countryside and would be happy using car hire.
