Peníscola is a small coastal town of around 7,400 people in the province of Castelló, at the northern edge of the Valencia region. Its heart is compact: Peniscola Castle, the lighthouse and the Museu de la Mar all sit within a few hundred yards of one another, with Platja Sud a short walk away and the longer Platja Nord under a mile off. Just beyond lies the Marjal de Peníscola, a protected salt marsh. Summers are warm and fairly dry, with highs near 30°C in August, and three airports with direct flights from the United Kingdom are within about two and a half hours by road, so it works well for a beach week or a cultural break.

Why go

  • Peniscola Castle, the lighthouse and the Museu de la Mar are all within a short stroll.
  • Platja Sud, Playa de Las Viudas and Platja Nord give you three beaches within a mile.
  • Reus and Valencia airports both have direct UK flights and are under two hours away.
