Pamplona is the capital of Navarre, a city of around 208,000 people set inland at 460 metres above sea level. Its appeal for a British visitor is how much sits within a few minutes' walk. The Iruña/Pamplona historic district holds the cathedral, the bullring, the Museum of Navarre and a run of palaces and convents, almost all within a third of a mile of each other. Summers are warm and notably dry, with July and August peaking at around 27°C. Winters are cool and wet. Bilbao, Zaragoza and Santander all have direct flights from the UK, and Bilbao airport is under two hours away by car.

Why go

  • Pamplona Cathedral, the Museum of Navarre and the bullring all lie within a quarter mile.
  • July brings around 27°C highs with only about four rainy days in the month.
  • Direct UK flights land at Bilbao, roughly 72 miles and 1h45 by car away.

Cathedral, Palaces and City Museums

Pamplona Cathedral is the city's best-known monument, about a quarter of a mile from the centre, with the Museo Diocesano de la Catedral de Pamplona at the same spot. A short walk away is the Plaza de Toros de Pamplona, the city's bullring, at around 0.2 miles. The Museum of Navarre, also a quarter of a mile out, is the place to start for the region's cultural heritage.

The historic district itself is protected, and it is dense with palaces. The Palacio de Navarra stands almost at the centre, and the Palace of the Kings of Navarre and the Palacio Episcopal de Pamplona are each about a quarter of a mile away. The baroque Palacio Marqués de Rozalejo and Casa Goicoechea are both around 0.2 miles away. The small Museo Pablo Sarasate is barely a tenth of a mile from the centre.

Where to stay in Pamplona

Staying In or Near the Old Town

Pamplona is inland, so there is no seafront to weigh against the centre. The real choice is between the historic district, where the cathedral, palaces and museums are all within a short stroll, and the wider city beyond it. As a city of more than 200,000 people, Pamplona offers neighbourhoods beyond the old quarter that tend to be calmer and more residential.

For a short break on foot, the old town makes the most sense, as almost every sight listed here is within a third of a mile. Live hotel prices are shown on this page so you can compare options across the city.

Hire a car

The easiest way to reach Pamplona and the villages around it is a hire car from Bilbao (BIO), about 1 h 43 min away.
