Mérida is a compact inland city of around 60,000 people in Extremadura, sitting at 223 metres in the Provincia de Badajoz. What sets it apart is how much of Roman Augusta Emerita is still standing within a short walk of the centre: the Roman amphitheatre, the Temple of Diana, the Roman Forum and the Provincial Forum, all gathered into the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, a World Heritage Site. The National Museum of Roman Art is close by, as are the Alcazaba and the co-cathedral of Saint Mary Major. There is no coast here, so this is a holiday for walking, looking and eating well rather than lying on a beach, ideally in spring or early autumn when the heat is gentle.

Why go

  • The Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida is a World Heritage Site spread across the town centre.
  • The National Museum of Roman Art lies about 0.2 miles from the centre, easy for families.
  • Seville airport has direct UK flights and sits roughly 106 miles away by road.

Top sights in Mérida

Roman Mérida on Foot

The headline is Augusta Emerita, the Roman colony whose remains shape the modern town, about half a mile from the centre. Its best-known piece is the Roman amphitheatre of Mérida, roughly 0.3 miles away, with the Alcazaba of Mérida, a fortress, at a similar distance. The National Museum of Roman Art, around 0.2 miles from the centre, is the place to put the ruins in context and is a good choice with children.

Within a quarter of a mile you will also find the Co-cathedral of Saint Mary Major, the Temple of Diana and the basilica of Saint Eulalia, while the Roman Forum and the Roman Provincial Forum sit almost in the centre itself. A little further out are the Roman Circus Maximus, about 0.6 miles away, the House of the Mitreo at around half a mile, the Mérida Bullring at 0.4 miles and the Lusitania Bridge at 0.6 miles. Together they form the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, listed as a World Heritage Site.

Where to stay in Mérida

Staying Near the Roman Centre

Almost every major sight in Mérida lies within about half a mile of the centre, so the old town is the obvious base: you can walk between the forum, the Temple of Diana, the museum and the amphitheatre without a car. With a population of around 60,000, the city is lively enough for an evening out but never overwhelming.

If you plan to explore Cáceres or Badajoz by car, a spot nearer the edge of town with easier parking can make sense. This page shows live hotel prices so you can compare options.

Hire a car

The easiest way to reach Mérida and the villages around it is a hire car from Seville (SVQ), about 2 h 31 min away.

Tips from Robin

Practical Tips for Mérida

In July and August temperatures reach 36°C to 37°C and the ruins offer little shade, so see the outdoor sites early in the morning and save the National Museum of Roman Art for the hottest hours.

Mérida is inland, so there is no beach to fall back on; pack for walking and plan the trip around sightseeing. Because the main sights sit within about half a mile of each other, a car is useful for day trips but unnecessary in town.

If visiting in autumn, bring a waterproof: October is the wettest month of the year.
