Cuenca is an inland city of around 55,000 people in Castille-La Mancha. It sits at 941 metres, roughly 3,090 feet, which shapes everything from its crisp winter nights to its warm, dry high summer. For British travellers it is a culture-first destination rather than a beach one. Cuenca Cathedral, the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español and a cluster of convents, monasteries and smaller museums all lie within about a mile of the centre. Madrid and Valencia airports, both with direct flights from the United Kingdom, are each a little over two hours away by car. That makes Cuenca work as a short break on its own or as a highland stop on a longer Spanish tour.

Why go

  • Cuenca Cathedral and the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español sit within a mile of the centre.
  • Madrid airport, with direct UK flights, is about 81 miles and two hours' drive away.

Where to stay in Cuenca

Staying Close to the Sights

Cuenca is inland, so the choice is not between beach and old town. The question is how close you want to be to the sights. Nearly every point of interest lies within roughly a mile of the centre, from the paleontological museum at 0.3 miles to the Fundación Antonio Pérez at 1.1 miles. Staying centrally means you can reach the cathedral, museums and convents on foot.

With a population of around 55,000, Cuenca has the services of a proper city without the scale of Madrid or Valencia. If you plan to explore the surrounding villages, a base on the edge of town with easy road access may suit better than a central one. This page shows live hotel prices for Cuenca so you can compare options for your dates.
