Valladolid is a city of around 300,000 people on the high plateau of Castille and León, sitting at roughly 700 metres above sea level. For British travellers it is a culture break rather than a beach holiday. The Cathedral of Valladolid, the National Museum of Sculpture, the Royal Palace and a run of convents and Renaissance palaces all lie within about half a mile of one another, so most of the sightseeing is done on foot. Madrid airport, with direct flights from the United Kingdom, is around 100 miles away. June and September bring the most comfortable weather, between a cold, frosty winter and a hot, very dry high summer.

Where to stay in Valladolid

Staying in the Historic Centre

Almost every major sight in Valladolid lies within half a mile of the centre, so a base in the old town puts the cathedral, the palaces and the museums on your doorstep and means you rarely need a car. This is an inland city of some 300,000 residents, so expect a working city atmosphere rather than a resort, with no seafront to choose between.

If you are travelling with children and plan to visit the Science Museum, it sits around 1.7 miles out, so a hotel on that side of the centre can be practical. The page shows live hotel prices so you can compare options for your dates.

Hire a car

The easiest way to reach Valladolid and the villages around it is a hire car from Madrid (MAD), about 2 h 22 min away.

Tips from Robin

Practical Points Before You Go

Valladolid sits at about 700 metres, so nights are cooler than you might expect: even in July the low is around 16°C, and in winter it falls to freezing. Pack a layer for evenings whatever the season.

The main sights are concentrated within half a mile, so walking is the simplest way to get around the centre. Keep a car for day trips to towns such as Peñafiel or Palencia.

High summer is hot and very dry, so plan sightseeing for the morning and save the indoor museums for the afternoon heat.
