Monterrey PalaceSalamanca is an inland city of around 145,000 people in Castille and León, set at 815 metres above sea level on the high plateau west of Madrid. Its appeal is concentrated and walkable. The protected Old City sits at the heart of town, and within roughly half a mile of the centre you find the New Cathedral, the Old Cathedral, the Dominican Convento de San Esteban, the Convent of Las Dueñas and a run of palaces including Monterrey, Anaya and Orellana. Summers are hot and almost rainless, and winters are cold. For British travellers it suits a culture-led city break rather than a beach holiday, and it works well as a base for smaller towns across the province.
Why go
- The New and Old Cathedrals stand side by side, both about half a mile from the centre.
- July and August bring just one rain day each, with highs of 31 to 32°C.

Old City or Outer Neighbourhoods
Salamanca is inland, so the choice is not coast versus town but how close you want to be to the Old City. Nearly every major sight lies within about two-thirds of a mile of the centre, which makes a room in or beside the historic core the practical choice if you want to walk everywhere and step out for an evening without planning.
With a population of around 145,000, the city is large enough to have quieter residential areas a little further out, which suit drivers or anyone happy to walk or take a short ride in. The page shows live hotel prices, so you can compare central and outer options for your dates.
Hire a car

Practical Points Before You Go
At 815 metres, Salamanca has a high-plateau climate. Even in July, nights drop to around 15°C, and winter lows sit near freezing, so pack a warm layer whatever the season.
Midsummer highs of 31 to 32°C with almost no rain mean the sun is relentless in the middle of the day. Since the main sights are all close together, plan walking for the morning and evening.
If you are travelling in autumn, note that October is the wettest month of the year, with rain on about half the days.
