Staying Central or Further Out
Almost everything worth seeing in Ávila lies within about half a mile of the centre, so a base in the historic core puts the cathedral, the Teresa sites and the palaces on your doorstep without any need for a car. This is an inland town of under 60,000 people rather than a resort, so evenings tend to be calmer than in the big cities.
If you are driving and planning day trips to Segovia or the Sierra towns, somewhere on the edge of town can make parking and motorway access simpler. The page shows live hotel prices so you can compare options for your dates.
Hire a car
The easiest way to reach Ávila and the villages around it is a hire car from Madrid (MAD), about 1 h 26 min away.

For mountain air, Los Molinos, Cercedilla and Navacerrada lie between 33 and 36 miles away in the Madrid region. In the other direction, the small villages of Abades, about 29 miles away, Buenaventura, about 34 miles, and Escalona, about 37 miles, make quieter excursions into rural Castille.
Tips from Robin
Practical Tips for Your Visit
At 1,127 metres, Ávila is far higher than most British travellers expect of Spain. Even in summer, evenings are fresh, so pack a layer. From November to March, plan for near-freezing nights.
The sights are close together, which makes the town ideal on foot; comfortable shoes matter more than car hire unless you are heading out on day trips. If you are visiting in autumn, October is the wettest month, so bring an umbrella and keep indoor sights such as the Museo de Ávila in reserve.
