Cudillero is a small coastal town of around 5,000 people on the Asturias shore of northern Spain, sitting just 27 metres above sea level. It is listed among the region's beautiful villages, and its own lighthouse, the Faro de Cudillero, stands about a quarter of a mile from the centre. Beyond it, the coastline unfolds into more than a dozen named beaches, from Playa de La Conchiquina barely half a mile away to Playa de Sienra around nine miles off. Summers are mild rather than scorching, with August highs of about 23°C, and Asturias Airport, which has direct flights from the United Kingdom, is only six miles down the road. For a couple or a family after coast, culture and nature without the southern heat, it is a strong candidate.

Why go

  • Asturias Airport, with direct UK flights, is about six miles and eight minutes' drive away.
  • The Faro de Cudillero lighthouse is a short stroll, roughly a quarter of a mile from town.
  • Mild summers peaking around 23°C in August suit beach days without the fierce southern heat.

Lighthouses, Beaches and the Village

Start with Cudillero itself, a municipality listed among the beautiful villages of Asturias and the reason most travellers come. From the centre it is roughly a quarter of a mile to the Faro de Cudillero lighthouse, and about 5.4 miles to a second lighthouse at Faro de Cabo Vidío, both good outings for couples and anyone who enjoys a headland view.

The beaches are the other great draw. Closest are Playa de La Conchiquina at about 0.6 miles, Playa de Las Rubias at 1.1 miles and the trio of Playas de El Pomar, Cerrón y La Olla at 1.5 miles. A little further out lie Playas de El Rebeón y de Castro (2.7 miles), Playas de Oleiros y Los Botes (2.9 miles) and Playa de El Castrillón (4.2 miles), then Playa de Peña Doria and Playa de Gradas, both around 5.2 miles. Choosing Your Base in Cudillero

With a population of around 5,000, Cudillero is a quiet place to stay rather than a lively resort. Staying in or near the village centre puts the lighthouse and the nearest beaches, La Conchiquina and Las Rubias, within easy reach on foot or a very short drive.

If you would rather wake up close to the sand, the beaches strung along the coast to either side give a more secluded feel, though a car makes life simpler there. For livelier evenings, Avilés is about 11 miles away. Live hotel prices for Cudillero are shown on this page.

Getting there from the UK

Flying and Driving From the UK

Few coastal towns in Spain are this close to an airport. Asturias Airport (OVD) has direct flights from the United Kingdom and lies about six miles from Cudillero, roughly an eight-minute drive.

Two Galician airports also have direct UK flights. A Coruña (LCG) is about 113 miles away, around two hours 40 minutes by car, and Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) is about 123 miles away, just under three hours' drive. Both are useful if fares or schedules suit better, though car hire is needed for the onward journey.

If you prefer to drive the whole way, the journey from Calais takes roughly 14 hours 45 minutes at the wheel, so plan an overnight stop or two in France.

Tips from Robin

Practical Tips for Your Stay

Pack a rain jacket whatever the month. Even in July and August, Cudillero sees 12 to 13 rainy days, so a flexible plan that mixes beaches with village walks and lighthouse visits works best.

Hire a car if you can. The village itself is small, but most of the beaches sit between one and nine miles away, and day trips to Oviedo or Gijón are far easier by road. With the airport only eight minutes away, picking up a car on arrival is simple.

Remember this is a town of only around 5,000 people, so expect a quieter pace than the big Spanish resorts, and head to Avilés or Gijón when you want more choice.
